The 1980s saw the rise of front-wheel drive cars as they were cheaper, safer, and more fuel and space efficient. Unsurprisingly, the lineup of fifth generation Corollas was the first in its series to mostly come equipped with this layout. Shorter, three-door hatchback variants such as this AE82 were also released as a replacement of the similar-looking Starlet series.
